Dragonfly
2015 Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum, "World of Kenji Ekuan" Exhibition
If we could devise a vehicle that could flutter and elegantly dance in the air like birds and insects, we might be able to fly in the air freely just like walking pleasantly. An insect like a dragonfly can hover, turn its feathers downward and flutter in a complicated manner. Taking its movements into account, I thought of a structure that would enable hovering with a simple driving action by placing three pairs of feathers equally in a concentric circle position, and that would also enable moving by controlling the fluttering angles of each feather. We made some models, and conducted some test flights. The prototype model showed a complicated and interesting flight instead of a rectilinear movement. From this movement, we named the model “Dragonfly”.
