The future state of online workshops

Starting last year, we have held online workshops on 3D design two times for foreign university students. That gave me an opportunity to think about how online workshops can evolve toward the future. For this year’s workshop, we took a new approach and carried out a consistent process of design from lecture to exhibition on cyberspace.

The program started with a lecture on dynamic 3D design. We arranged a 3D design sample on cyberspace for the students to learn the design process step by step.

In the latter half of the program, the participants were requested to work on a new object based on the knowledge they learned in the prior stage. By displaying 3D models of their own designing in the virtual museum, they were able to draw inspiration from other students to enhance their design skills. In the final stage of the program, their works were on display to the public as an online exhibition.

I’ve got a feeling that this kind of workshop system can be applied not only to design students but also to people involved in a wide spectrum of social activities in the future. Specialist designers will be able to join hands with other participants to get feedbacks and advance co-creation, instead of devoting themselves to solitary works of designing at their desks. Based on our own experiences, we will keep up our efforts to pursue an ideal style of online workshop.
