EXPO’70 ストリートファニチュア・サイン計画

1970

1970年代は、７０年に大阪で開催された世界万国博覧会で幕を開けた。この機に東海道新幹線が全線開通するなど、万博は大変化の契機になった。デザインにおいても、会場に設営する様々な物が対象となり、領域の拡大確立をもたらした。

なかでもストリートファニチュア（屋外に設置・配備するベンチほか道具的な物）やサイン（誘導等のための表示類）はそれまで雑件扱いされ、デザインもないがしろにされがちであった。これを打破すべく大阪万博ではデザイン対象として正式に取り上げられた。

1970年に開催された大阪万博において、国内初となったストリートファニチュア計画は、GKの榮久庵憲司をディレクターとし、剣持勇デザイン研究所、トータルデザインアソシェーツ、GKインダストリアルデザイン研究所の共同でデザインされた。博覧会場の屋外に設置される、案内や守衛のための有人のブースから、休憩所のシェルターやベンチ、水飲みやゴミ箱、電話ボックスや自動販売機、案内サインなど、様々なストリートファニチュアを対象とした。

計画推進には他に多くの事物や部署が関わるところとなり、デザインのプロセスや方法の確立を要した。そのため事前の自主研究を含め着手は大阪万博開催の４年前のモントリール博の視察からとなった。かくして、大阪万博は新たなデザイン領域を認知することで拡大確立する大きな機会となった。

EXPO’70 Osaka that Developed and Established the Realm of Design

EXPO’70 Osaka held in Osaka in 1970 lifted the curtain of 70s. The exposition become momentum of tremendous change in Japan such as full opening of Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) line. In design also, a variety of facilities in the exposition site become objectives of design  and they were developed and established as a professional realms.

Street Furniture project, devised for the first time in Japan at the site of Osaka Expo'70, was jointly designed by Kenji Ekuan of GK as direc­tor, Kenmochi Isamu Design Associates, Total Design Associates, and GK Industrial Design Associates. They included booths for guides and security personnel, shelters and benches at rest areas, drinking fountains, trash boxes, telephone booths, automatic vending machines, guide signs and so on which were placed at the expo site. 

Above all, street furniture (fixtures laid out and installed) and signs (signage for directory alike) had tended to be treated as miscellaneous items.  To break the notion, they were officially taken as a design objectives in EXPO’70 Osaka.

While many objects and departments came to join to implement the project, the establishment of a methodology and a process of it was required. For that purpose, the project was already worked on with research tour of Montreal EXPO’70 Osaka become a best ever opportunity being recognized and establishing a new design realm.
