Do you all like cleaning? In today’s work environment, where working from home has become increasingly common, it’s quite natural to pay more attention to your indoor environment, whether you like it or not, and feel the urge to tidy up your room. As for me, I sometimes find myself cleaning the room while I’m lost in thought.
In recent years, the Japanese word “totonou,” which literally means “to be in order” or “to feel refreshed,” has become a buzz word as saunas are booming in Japan. This term symbolizes self-care, especially among Generation Z.
“Totonou” is an intransitive verb that refers to one’s current condition. Meanwhile, “totonoeru” is transitive and refers to the act of putting something into an orderly and proper state. Design work falls into the latter category. I believe design plays an important role in organizing various elements. It contributes to creating industrial products by arranging information, requirements, and even people’s thoughts in an orderly manner.
A clean and well-maintained space is comfortable. That doesn’t depend on how many objects it holds. What really count is whether the space is organized in good balance. For that purpose, we need to clean every nook and cranny of the room. The same goes for design. As a designer, I make it a daily habit to pay attention to every detail and maintain balance so I can produce the best possible output.
