Minus one in the act of making products

When we finish using products, they are turned into garbage.

Then, if we collect wasted items and sorted them out according to their materials and colors, they can be recycled in good condition. But this could be difficult and time-consuming.

The picture below shows packs of plastic wastes collected from households. They are the mixtures of miscellaneous bits of wastes, giving off terrible smells. From this status, they are sorted out, melted down, and recycled.

This process is costly, and the recycled materials are produced in poor quality. In this way, the process reaches a minus-one point, which is lower than the starting point of traditional manufacturing that consumes plenty of resources.

This is where the current situation stands. We are entering an era where we need to think about sustainability for the future.

That said, thinking about the future is a feel-good thing. If we can convey this pleasant feeling through design by changing it into a form or an experience, we can make a leap from the negative to the positive, which is also an important role of design.

Why don’t you join us to think about that?
