The 4th Japan Finland Design Symposium / Program & Report
Theme: The Quietness (Design for the Quietness)
date: October 11 (sat)
Venue: Bunka Women's University, Tokyo

Finland and Japan located far away to each other. Many thoughts and perceptions in common for both peoples, by their chemistry of respective views on nature, technology and human being, have come to attract each other even before the both noticed. The theme that has bridged different cultures are "The Quietness.h This is the common theme for both sides of symposium held for the last two years organized by Japan Finland Design Association. The association was established in April 2001 aiming to build a cooperative relation between both nations through design.

The evolution of civilization has brought great comfort on our daily life. However, it has left a big drawback behind on the other hand. That was generation of noise. Awful lot of noise that was produced by so called progress of civilization. Cars, jet planes, machines. A negative and biggest human heritage, unintentionally produced, took away the place of quietness once hid in nature, and destroyed its existence. Now we have to take the quietness being pushed far away back to us. For that purpose, we have to have our own intention to pursue the quietness. The thoughts in common connected both countries. How we could meet the quietness. Can't we find some secret way to achieve it in both histories and cultures nurtured in the eternal flow of time? We have thought out. And the thoughts of both sides roused the actions.

Design field now has to strongly steer itself to take a role for new century in a rough high sea of global economy. Creating a rich human environment of Japan and Finland through design in the present and future is being required most. Both countries also have highly developed IT and communication field in common these days, and the leading role for the field should be recognized by both sides as well. While using very advanced technology not only hard wares, the policy of promoting human aspects and providing more humanistic activities are encouraging direction for the both.

Feeling an artificial thing in nature, and seeing nature in an artificial thing. In this meaning, we would like to seek the possible states of creative works and peoples' mind by re-exploring ultimate meaning of quietness. Thus we will be able to find true quietness both in rugged nature and in urban din of dazzling cities. We have actually felt an ever larger ripple every time the symposiums have been held first time in Helsinki year 2000, the second in Tokyo year 2001, and forthcoming the third in Helsinki year 2002. We are heartily hoping that sharing of every thought will create the greater link of friendship for a further voyage.

The 4th symposium was held on October 11, 2003 in Tokyo.
