When I see or hear something, a memory sometimes comes to mind out of nowhere. I would like to use this column to talk about the semiotic nature of this phenomenon.<\/p>\n

It is said that the brain stores memories in the form of symbols to efficiently stock enormous amounts of information related to our experiences. When something works as a trigger to activate this database, the stored information is reconstructed, leading us to recognize this process as a memory.<\/p>\n

The causes of the symbolization can be broadly divided into two categories: subjective and objective ones. The former works subjectively, which means even something that happens to exist in our mind can trigger symbolization. In the latter, however, symbolization depends on the power of the object that works as a trigger. If it derives from nature, it may invoke, for example, an image of majestic landscapes. If it is a man-made object, symbolization is up to its producer\u2019s creativity, which provides an important point of view for creators.<\/p>\n

In general, creators pour a great deal of energy into their work driven by a strong desire to touch someone\u2019s heartstrings. This is likely the source of the objective cause of the symbolization. Since the symbols of experiences can be shared, those created in events like festivals are particularly appealing. Even if there is only one person who shares the symbol, words of appreciation or recognition from its recipient are gratifying to the creator. As a designer, I want to do work that leaves a lasting impression.<\/p>\n
