The Oct Cafe serves customers from spring through fall at the Open Cafe set up on the tree-lined riverside in Hiroshima's Peace Park.
The nickname "Oct" is a pun derived from an English word and a Japanese word. The English word "octo(gon)" describes the shape of the shop. "Okuto" in Japanese means setting something somewhere temporarily.
The negative image of a temporary booth is here transformed into something fun: a structure that suddenly appears and is "plopped" into place, complete and ready for service.
